Staff of Victoria Hotels & Resorts retuned to Vietnam on the weekend, bringing with them more smiles than tiredness, after a two-week trip of music show, charity and fun in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Gilles Poggi, head organizer and general manager of the Victoria Phan Thiet Resort, told the Daily that the Victoria Sidecar Mekong Expedition 2005 was a “big success” with everything having gone smoothly.
“We traveled some 3,400 kms by sidecars and other vehicles on good and bad roads and through rains and winds from Ventral Vietnam to HCMC to the Mekong Delta to Cambodia and back,” Poggi said.

The band La Souris Deglinguee from Paris and employees of the Victoria Hotels & Resorts in Vietnam yesterday visited under-privileged children and old people in the Mekong Delta as part of the Victoria Sidecar Mekong Expedition.
The Victoria staff and La Souris Deglinguee went from class to class of the Tuong Lai (future) School in Can Tho City in the morning to donate notebooks, pens, pencils, clay toys, soaps and candies.
To thank the donors, the children and teachers sang Vietnamese children’s songs, receiving much applause.

La Souris Deglinguee from France arrived in HCMC yesterday, ready for their concerts in central and southern Vietnam and Cambodia as part of an expedition that Victoria Hotels & Resorts is organizing.
Tai Luc, the band’s guitarist and singer, told the Daily after rehearsing at the HCMC Theatre that he and other band members were excited about their first-ever concerts in Vietnam.
Luc, whose father is Vietnamese, said he was so happy to perform in Vietnam where his father used to live. Luc has visited Vietnam twice before.

A nine-member band from France will tour southern Vietnam and Cambodia in a music expedition that Victoria Hotels & Resorts is organizing this month.
La Souris Deglinguee will perform for Victoria’s invitees in the central coastal city of Phan Thiet next Thursday, before taking the Victoria Sidecar Mekong Expedition next Friday.

Thua Thien – Hue – Provincial authorities of Thua Thien – Hue granted a licence last week to a French-owned Hong kong company to begin the first phase of development for a beach resort in the central province’s Phu Vang District.

French developer Victoria Hotels & Resorts has announced a plan to build a US$12 million beach resort in the central province of Thua Thien – Hue.
The project includes 50 villas and 150 bungalows in Phu Vang District, 25km from the ancient city of Hue. The company plans to begin construction of the first phase of the 50- ha resort in March.
An investment of $4.8 million will be spent to build the first 10 villas and 40 bungalows on a stretch of unspoiled sandy beach. Victoria presently operates five boutique hotels in the country.

As I swerved my way through heavily over laden backpackers and women selling bottles of water, I began to wonder whether the premium Victoria Express train to Sapa was worth the extra money. After all we are all part of the same train that snakes its way up the country north to Lao Cai, just over 30Km from Sapa. But as my lost soul was collected by the train supervisor and whisked away to my luxurious compartment, it soon became clear that the Victoria Express is not simply about traveling from point ‘a’ to ‘b’.

Every day in the early morning and again in the late afternoon, the Lady Hau and its cargo of Victoria Can Tho Hotel guests depart from the hotel wharf for a trip along the Hau River, the main southern arm of the Mekong Delta.

By far the most interesting way to cross from Vietnam to Cambodia is by boat along the Bassac River from the Mekong Delta. The most up-market way to do the trip is to stay at the Victoria Chau Doc Hotel and then take their express boat.

It took about five hours to travel the hair-raising journey through the Delta over innumerable bridges and tiny tributaries from Saigon by car. At times I felt that I would never make it to my destination. I arrived at the hotel around 3pm to be greeted with a jasmine garland and a refreshing fruite ....

La vedette repart à vive allure, laissant derrière elle pont, villages et colonnes de fumées des briqueteries artisanales. Il faut cependant attendre les heures flamboyantes du crépuscule pour saisir toute la magie du delta. Les ombres des frondaisons s’allongent pour mieux se mêler, engloutissant pêle-mêle le fleuve et ses habitants. Acteurs silencieux et solitaires, les pêcheurs délaissent les carrelets plient leurs éperviers (filets qui se lancent), immergent les dernières nasses puis quittent discrètement la scène à la rame. Le trafic ne faiblit pas mais les sampans, qui arborent au mieux une vague lanterne en guise de feu ....

La chaîne Victoria a eu la très bonne idée d’apporter du confort à l’aventure. Voilà sept ans, elle construisait un hôtel au bord de l’eau, une formidable escale pour partir à la découverte du delta. L’arrivée en bateau et l’agréable surprise d’un cadre exceptionnel demeurent l’une des émotions du voyage dans le delta. La puissance commerciale du delta se mesure au marché flottant de Cai Rang, à quelques kilomètres de Can Tho. La découvrir de bon matin en compagnie de Lady Hau reste une expérience envoûtante. Cette “dame du fleuve” est une ancienne barge astucieusement restaurée par une société française, Victoria, qui a ouvert, à Can Tho et Chau Doc, les deux premiers hôtels de classe internationale dans le delta du Mékong.

La frontière entre Viêtnam et Cambodge venant tout juste de s’ouvrir, la compagnie des Hôtels Victoria a affrété “Victoria Sprite”, une vedette rapide, pour remonter le Mékong de Saïgon à Phnom Penh. Une croisière de 5 jours, pendant lesquels les passagers font escale dans deux hôtels au bord du fleuve, le Can Tho et le Chau Doc (à partir de 2318F les 5 nuits et la croisière). Epris de coins reculés, ce groupe hôtelier a également remis sur rails un joli train à l’ancienne: partant de Hanoi, le Victoria Express traverse en dix heures jungles ....

Pour nous, l’écrivain et cinéaste a remonté le fleuve mythique du Vietnam jusqu’au Cambodge.

Grâce à la toute récente ouverture aux touristes de la frontière fluviale entre le Vietnam et le Cambodge, on peut désormais remonter le Mékong de Hô Chi Minh-ville (ex-Saigon) à Phnom Penh. Qui mieux que l’auteur du “Crabe-Tambour” et de “la 317e Section” pouvait célébrer et relater cet événement? Récit d’un périple au parfum d’aventure et de nostalgie.

Fantasy island: $12m resort for Phu Quoc?
Vietnam’s largest island has been earmarked as the next destination for Victoria Hotels and Resorts, after the French hotel group asked for a licence last week to build a $12 million resort complex on Phu Quoc.
Vietnamese and offshore investors have proposed nearly 100 tourism and resort projects on the island, which is an hour’s flight from Ho Chi Minh City, but the Victoria is the first foreign-invested developer applying to the Ministry of Planning and Invesment for approval.

Vietnamese and foreign children from international schools in HCMC together with parents attended an afternoon of entertainment, games and gifts at Sedona Suite Garden in downtown HCMC on Saturday.
Air France, and Victoria Hotels and Resorts organized the Kids’ Christmas Party for some 800 three-to ten-year-olds, according to Victoria director of sales and marketing Marie Giuge.
A buffet of sandwiches, pastries, soft drinks and candies was set up. A cooking class with chef costumes; face, egg and ceramic painting and coloring; egg and sack races; and other games were also offered.

Victoria Chau Doc Hotel has opened the town’s first floating restaurant on a wooden boat docked where the Hau and Chau Doc rivers meet.
Le Jarai Floating Restaurant serves regional beverages and more than 20 popular Vietnamese dishes, including ostrich and barbecue typical of the Mekong Delta provinces.
